4MATIC Variable All-Wheel Drive

This highly fuel-efficient all-wheel drive system delivers improved safety and handling on all road surfaces by automatically changing from pure front-wheel drive for steady highway driving to a 50:50 front-rear split in more challenging conditions.

4MATIC Permanent All‑Wheel Drive

This fuel-efficient, compact, and lightweight permanent all-wheel drive system is always active with a fixed torque split, so power is always applied to all four wheels. When the system detects slippery conditions, it shifts power to the wheel on each axle that is spinning more slowly, improving traction as well as stability.

4MATIC Variable All-Wheel Drive

This fully variable 4MATIC system offers the benefits of both all-wheel and rear-wheel drive. Depending on the conditions, it can automatically send up to 100% of the engine’s torque to either axle, front or rear. The adaptable multi-disc clutch guarantees each of the four wheels will achieve maximum traction, including on snow and ice and in on- or off-roading conditions, enhancing handling in any season.

AMG Performance 4MATIC Variable All-Wheel Drive

This performance all-wheel drive system offers an ideal combination of agility, efficiency and traction, delivering enhanced safety without compromising driving enjoyment. Depending on road conditions, fully variable power is sent to the front or rear axle. When they are good, the vehicle operates in front-wheel drive only. When conditions become challenging, power is channelled to the rear axle, as well, for as long as needed.
